This cold weather has got me ready to hibernate for the next 4 months. I do not handle cold very well. Unless there is snow, I want absolutely nothing to do with the outside. Which leads me to the purpose of this post.
On a bitterly cold evening, I love to snuggle up in my favorite fuzzy blanket and a really good book. There is something about the magic of getting lost in the pages of a good book. I love the feeling of being transported to a different world. If a book is really good, I completely forget the fact that I am reading a book. I am there with the characters. I am feeling their emotions. I feel their anger, their pain, their happiness. I am along for the adventure or the suspense, and that feeling is why I read.
So, I thought, why not put together a post of books that take me to that special place. Winter can be a hard season for most people. It is cold and miserable. A lot of people get seasonal depression. A lot of people just don't want to leave the comfort (and warmth) of their home. Here are ten books that can solve these winter issues. Here are ten books you can get lost in too.
This is the first of a three part trilogy. Unlike other romance young adult novels, this story follows a love triangle that has lasted throughout the decades, literally. What do you do when you discover you have the one thing you never believed in? When Clea Raymond stumbles upon a boy name Sage, her whole life changes. Sage is more than just a stranger in the background. He is her soul mate to the highet degree. This book is perfect for fans of paranormal and romance. Hilary Duff does a great job creating this adventure driven by love and suspense without feeling overwhelming or cheesy. I found this book at a yard sale and was so glad I did. Part one of a trilogy, I read the entire series in a week. The first book left me wanting more that I got the next two books right away.
When Katie runs away to a small town from a dark past, she is reluctant to settle down. Sooner or later she finds herself falling in love with a widowed father forced to keep her past a secret. Will she be able to truly leave it all behind? Abuse is a topic that hits home for me and is what ultimately brought me to this story. I will admit that I saw the movie before I read the book. I fell in love with the tragic story line and the promise of finding love again. Nicholas Sparks has a way of conveying real romance in his stories. The tone of this book was captivating and a complete page turner.
This book tells the story of neighbors Gabby and Travis who seem to already have it all. Gabby is working towards becoming a doctor from a prestigious family with a doctor boyfriend. Travis enjoys being a ladies man never settling down and just having fun. When Travis and Gabby meet it is far from ordinary. Their once "perfect" lives are turned upside down as they quickly fall in love with each other, but when tragedy strikes the future of them is uncertain. I loved this book so much. I believe Nicholas Sparks truly captured life in this book. How everything isn't always certain and sometimes you just have to blindly follow your heart. If you love emotion-filled books then this book is for you. I was crying. I was laughing. I was falling in love. I truly reccommed this book.
Everlasting (Kissed by an Angel Series #5)
This is book five of the Kissed by an Angel Series. What do you do when your deceased boyfriend comes back to life as someone else? What do you do when that someone else is a murder? Everlasting follows the star-crossed romance of Tristain and Ivy and their vfight to be together again. This book is definitely a paranormal fantasy esque feel. It is romantic but more spiritual. Elizabeth Chandler does a great job conveying the emotions of loosing a loved one as well as the suspense of the great beyond. It was really easy to get lost in this book and I would recommend the entire series as well.
This was such a powerful story and one that I will always hold dear to my heart. An oragami heart changes the tone for two girls in Auschwitz during the Holocaust. Empowerment, bravery, and hope. Two best friends; Zlatka and Fania share a bond that saves their lives through horrid times. Based on a true story-- the oragami heart can still be seen today in a Holocaust Museume in Montreal. This story was hard htitting. The power of love, friendship, bravery, and hope was all found in the pages. I did not want to put this down as I followed the heartbreaking event through the eyes of two girls. I would recommend this book to anyone. It truly put a new perspective on things.
I Am Number Four
Paranormal, sci-fi, romance, and fantasy are all things you will find in this book. "I Am Number Four" tells the story of Number Four and the journey that is taken to avoid being hunted. They look like you, they talk like you, but they are far from you. This story was suspensful and hard to put down. The first book of the series, I am not normally one for sci-fi but I was hooked on this book. If you like the supernatural then this is the book for you.
The Witch of Little Italy
This book tells the story of an unexpected pregnancy, a return home to a forgotten former life, a family clan, and a childhood sweetheart that brings flash backs of what was before. You will be entranced by the mystery and magic of this book. I especially loved following Eleanor's journey through finding out more about her family the Amore Clan. Suzannae Palmieri does an excellent job conveying the mysterey and adventure in this novel.
Warning I am completely biased when it comes to Ellen Hopkins. I am in love with her wirter's voice in her novels. This book especially is one of my favorites. "Perfect" tells the story of four high school seniors and their struggle through life having to reach unrealistic expectations of "perfectism." I love the way Ellen Hopkins uses multiple point of views in her books. It allows me to relate more with the characters and brings more depth to the book. This is the perfect book if you like realistic young adult that covers tough topics.
The Princess Diaries (Princess Diaries Series #1)
This book will always be a favorite of mine. Book one of the Princess Diaries series, this book is about Mia who finds out that she is the princess of Genovia when all she was trying to do was make it through high school. This book is what ispired the popular movie with Anne Hathaway. It is a fun read and is really easy to get lost in the book. It is a light read as well, so if you are a lover of young adult or the movie then you will like this book.
Rainbow Rowell captures the perfect young adult novel with his book "Fangirl." It follows the story of Cath a Simon Snow fan who loves writing fan ficition. She is starting a new journey of her life at college with a roomate who constantly has her boyfriend over and a professor who doesn't believe in fanfiction. How will Cath make it through the next four years? This is a great story if you love coming-of-age and fanfiction stories. Rainbow Rowell ahs a way of capturing the teen persona in his words.
