How to Create a Writing Platform
I've been looking forward to writing this post. As a writer myself, I have done a lot of research on crafting a writer platform. What is a writer platform? It is your own personal way of marketing yourself as a writer. It is essential and beneficial for any writer. By having a platform you are building a following, you are creating a brand.
Building a platform takes time. Strive for something real—strong channels that will help you sell. Simply being on Twitter and having a website does not mean you have a platform. Those are just the first steps. - Writers Digest
If you are striving to become a published author, or if you already are one than having a platform is beneficial to you. Here is how to start building your own platform.
FIGURE OUT WHERE YOU WOULD LIKE TO START
What I mean by this is ask yourself where you would like to grow. This could be starting your own blog, writing for a publication, or crafting a newsletter. Sometimes writers will do all three. It is important that you choose one that you will enjoy doing. When it boils down to it is about doing something you love.
ASK YOURSELF HOW YOU WANT OTHERS TO PERCEIVE YOU
How do you want yourself to come across to others? It is important to take time and think about this because you are creating an image for the whole world to see. This is your internet foot print. Try asking yourself who you are and sum it up into three words. Find out more on how to do this here.
KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE AND HOW TO TARGET THEM
What genre does your book or style of writing fall under? By figuring this out it will be easier to know what kind of audience you want to draw in. Go on author sites that are similar to your writing style. Read what they write, observe, look at their followers and request them to follow you! By drawing in this kind of audience when it comes time to market your work it is something your followers will be more likely to purchase.
HAVE FUN WITH IT
Ultimately, the goal behind all of this is to do something that you love doing. Write what you want to write about, set a schedule that works best with you, network with others who have the same interests. Your writer platform reflects who you are as a person, and what better way to do that than by being you!
