Why You Should Create a Personal Brand
Businessdictionary.com defines branding as: “The process involved in creating a unique name and image for a product in the consumer’s mind, mainly through advertising campaigns with a consistent theme. Branding aims to establish a significant and differentiated presence in the market that attracts and retains loyal customers.”
Branding can be an important tool when it comes to marketing a company or even oneself. As college students, we are constantly trying to find a way to build-up our own resume. In a sense, we are trying to make ourselves more “valuable” to the job market.
Personal branding is a great way to not only define yourself, but market yourself to potential employers. The best part is that personal branding is both inexpensive and flexible to your busy schedule.
HERE ARE 5 QUICK AND EASY WAYS TO BUILD YOUR VERY OWN PERSONAL BRAND.
1. DEFINE WHO YOU ARE
The first step is to decide how you want other people to perceive you. List your hobbies, interests and personal traits. Ask yourself who you want to be? Who do you still want to be in 10, 20, even 30 years from now? Evaluate your list and choose.
2. CREATE A PERSONAL WEBSITE
Here is where you will showcase your brand. You can easily set up your own self-domain through inexpensive hosts like Wordpress and Bluehost. With a website you can post your resume, display your works and even run a blog. Having a website allows potential employers to visualize who you are – your brand.
Side Note: I use Squarespace. It is inexpensive and easy to use.
3. PICK YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE
When it comes to branding most professionals are selling something. In this case you are selling yourself to potential employers. Decide on what kind of employers you are trying to target. For example, if you are looking for a nonprofit job in self-harm you would target nonprofits like To Write Love on Her Arms. Research your potential employers to get an idea of what your brand should have.
4. BE MORE PURPOSEFUL IN SOCIAL MEDIA
Remember that everything you don social media: a tweet, a post or even an Instagram photo contributes to your personal brand. Start to be strategic with your social media postings. Plan stuff out and keep it relevant to your brand.
5. HAVE A STRONG CONSISTENT NARRATIVE
A strong personal brand needs a strong narrative. You may have many different interests and this is where consistency is important. By keeping a consistent narrative your brand may vary but it will be controlled and strong.
Follow these simple steps and you will have a thriving personal brand in no time!
