How to Encourage your Child to Read

How to Encourage your Child to Read

Reading can be such a wonderful thing. It can open up a whole new world of possibilities and adventure. Opening a book is like opening your mind. It is essential to encourage your child read. Books teach children how to use their imagination, as well as enhance their learning. Books are also a great way parents can bond with their children. I made sure I included a bedtime story in my son's routine so that his imagination can grow. It is my favorite time of the night, especially when he tries to read back to me (my son is 3).

But what do you do if your child isn't interested in reading or if you aren't sure what books are right for them?

First, don't fret. Below are some great tips on how to encourage your child to read.

Let Your Child Choose

A great way to encourage your child to read is to let them choose which books they would like to read or be read to. Guessing what your child might like doesn't always work (unless they are an infant). Put your child in front of a few selections and let them pick up what catches their eye. You can even take them to your local bookstore and let them browse around. Making them a part of the decision makes it a lot more fun and exciting to them.

Let Your Child Read

Even if your child doesn't know how to-- let them read! My son loves telling me what he thinks the words say and I love hearing the excitement in my son's voice as he "reads" me the  book. Letting your child read, if they want to, encourages them to learn. You can also help them read it to you. Sound out the words, point out pictures and ask them questions.

Repeat Your Child's Favorite Stories

You will notice the more you read with a child the more they favor a certain story. Encourage their enthusiasm by reading that story every night if they want. It doesn't matter if they heard it fifty times, they love it and that's all that matters. If your child doesn't have a favorite yet then read a handful of the same books. You don't want to overwhelm them. Just pick 3 to 4 books and alternate them each night.

Subscription boxes are an exciting and fun way to encourage your child to read. He/She will enjoy getting that special box in the mail each month and will be anxious to see what gifts are inside. A great subscription box service is Book Box Club for Kids by Usborne Books. What is Usborne?
